Strategy for Review of Magnet and Implementation of Changes

Strategy for Review of Magnet and Implementation of Changes
Given budget changes, increased enrollment due to redistricting, and increased demographic disparity between Magnet and Non-Magnet classes at Evansdale Elementary, a review of the program has been initiated.  The plan for review and revision is detailed below.
Step 1:  Gather information on the history of Magnet including the reasons it was originally formed and the original goals of the program for Evansdale Elementary.  This information will be presented at the September School Council meeting.
Step 2: Obtain a full understanding of what Evansdale is legally obligated to include in the Magnet program including: curriculum, class structure, and enrollment.  This information will be presented at the September School Council meeting.
Step 3: Vet proposed changes to the Evansdale Magnet program within the School Council at the October 2012 meeting.
Step 4: Establish one proposal during the October 2012 meeting for presentation to the Evansdale Community.
Step 5: Publicize the proposed changes to Magnet through the PTA email blast, posting in the school, the Evansdale Eagle Newsletter, and courier communication.
Step 6: Conduct facilitated focus groups open to all Evansdale community which will occur at multiple times on one day in late October.  Although open to all members of the Evansdale Elementary School community, RSVP will be required to allow adequate presence of facilitators at each session.  The specifics of this event will be communicated as in Step 5.
Step 7: Evansdale School Council will collate the responses and feedback from the focus groups and revise the proposed plan accordingly, prior to the November School Council Meeting.
Step 8: School Council will endorse one final proposal reflective of community input at the November School Council meeting.
Step 9:  At Dr. McGuire’s discretion, this proposal will be presented to DCSS as the requested modifications to the Evansdale Magnet program.
Step 10:  If the proposal is presented and approved by DCSS, the changes will be publicized as indicated in Step 5 above.  If no changes are proposed, or if changes are not accepted by DCSS, this information will be communicated by the same channels.  If necessary, the process will repeat beginning with Step 3.
