What is School Council

You may have heard about Evansdale’s School Council, but might not know much about its purpose. The goal of school councils is to “bring communities and schools closer together in a spirit of cooperation to solve difficult education problems, improve academic achievement, provide support for teachers and administrators, and bring parents into the school-based decision-making process.”

Evansdale School Council is made up of 11 members (six elected parents or guardians of Evansdale students, two local business persons, two teachers and the school principal) who meet monthly to provide advice, recommendations, and assistance to Dr. McGuire and our county board of education. School Council members serve two-year terms and elections occur in the spring of each year.  All individuals with a child at Evansdale are eligible to run for a position on School Council and to vote in the election.

The School Council provides advice and recommendations to the school principal and, where appropriate, the local board of education and local school superintendent on any matter related to student achievement and school improvement.  The responsibilities of school council members include: maintenance of a school-wide perspective on issues, regular participation in school council meetings, participation in information and training programs, serving as a link between the school council and the community, encouraging participation of parents and others within the school community, working to improve student achievement and performance, advancing the school’s stated mission, and working to improve the school’s operations.

Evansdale’s School Council meets the first Tuesday of every month (except December, June, and July unless necessary) at 5 p.m. in the Media Center.  These meetings are open to the public; however, meetings are not open to public comment unless the individual has requested placement on the agenda at least one week prior to the scheduled meeting.  Minutes from the School Council meetings are posted on the information board at the school.

If you have questions or concerns about Evansdale, please don’t hesitate to contact any of us on the Council.  The email address is:  edaleschoolcouncil@gmail.com
